
Dr. Chan joined NTU as a Lecturer in 1991 after obtaining his PhD and subsequently working as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London. He is a Professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.Prof. Chan is a Director of Maz Energy Pte Ltd, where he provides technical advices to the Board since 2004. He is also the founder and Director of a start-up company, Xin-Xiang Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd., in Guangzhou with key business in manufacturing of high value-added components for PEMFCs. He is also the consultant to Total SA, exploring business opportunity in hydrogen technologies. Prof. Chan is a member of Management Board of Energy Studies Institute, Singapore as well as a member of Advisory Board of Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies. His research interest is inclined to Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technology. He is the Organizer and Program Chair of the 1st World Hydrogen Technologies Convention (WHTC), Singapore in 2005 and the Conference Chair of HYPOTHESIS XIII in 2018. From 2006 to 2008, he held a joint appointment with A*Star as Director of SERC Fuel Cell Programme. Under this appointment, he led a team of more than 100 researchers from 4 A*Star research institutes working closely with Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Systems Pte. Ltd. on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. Prof. Chan is also one of founders and Principal Investigators of Singapore-Peking University Research Centre for A Sustainable Low Carbon Future funded by National Research Foundation between 2011 and 2016. His research has gained him a number of international recognitions, which include George-Stephenson Award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK, in 2000, Scientific Achievement Award from International Association of Hydrogen Energy, USA in 2007, “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” award from Thomson Reuters in 2014, Nanyang Award (Research Excellence) in recognition of outstanding contribution in scientific knowledge on a global scale through novel research breakthrough in 2015, National Day President Medals in 2017 and 2018,Nanyang Award (Innovation and Entreprenuership) in 2018 and The Star of Innovation Talents by Guangzhou Government. He was appointed as President’s Chair in Energy in Mar 2019. Prof. Chan has published ~260 refereed journal papers with a total citations of more than 11,000 and h-index of 53 obtained from Web of Science. He is the founder and Co-Director of Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute in Guangzhou, which is fully funded by the Chinese government. He is the editorial board member of “Fuel Cells – from fundamentals to systems”, “Journal of Power Technologies”, “Energy Conversion and Management” and “International Journal of Energy Research”.
